Free Seminar for Prospective College Students RSVP By 3/1/18

Info Session 2018Supervisor Romaine Announces Free Seminar for Prospective College Students

posted on

Farmingville, NY – On March 8, the Brookhaven Youth Bureau and Suffolk Community College will host a free seminar for parents and students who are interested in enrolling in college. Representatives from Suffolk Community College will discuss the college application process, financial aid opportunities, scholarship opportunities and the various programs and services the college offers to students. Much of the information provided can be used toward the overall college application process. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.

“Suffolk County Community College offers hundreds of diverse programs,” said College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “The College, New York State’s largest community college, provides a high-quality education at an affordable price that can lead students toward a four-year institution. The college also offers a host of grant and scholarship programs, easy transfer between SUNY institutions and a host of clubs and athletic opportunities. I urge students to learn more about all that Suffolk has to offer.”

Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “It is great seeing the Youth Bureau and Suffolk Community College continuing to work together to help both students and parents in Brookhaven Town. This seminar will help guide them through the college application process and also make them aware of the many opportunities that are available.”

Councilman Michael Loguercio ’80, who serves as the Town Board Liaison to the Youth Bureau, said, “The college application process includes many important family decisions, and this program will help educate both parents and children about that decision-making process. I want to thank Suffolk Community College and the Youth Bureau for the great programs and services they provide to Brookhaven’s youth.”

The seminar will last approximately an hour and a half. Each presenter will speak for approximately a half hour, and then take ten to fifteen minutes after their presentations to answer questions.

Participants are asked to register in advance with the Youth Bureau by Thursday, March 1 by calling 631-451-8011.

6 reasons to go to #SUNY Alumni Night at Yankee Stadium on 9/27, one that includes FREE tickets to a game next year!

SUNY Alumni Are Set For An All-Star Night at Yankee Stadium. Are You?

SUNY Alumni image over the top of Yankee Stadium duiring game at night.

Grab your best jersey and favorite baseball hat because the 6th annual SUNY Alumni Night at the Ballpark is a great event for SUNY alumni to enjoy a fantastic night of baseball and networking with their family and friends! The push for the playoffs is on in Major League Baseball, especially in the American League, and we are excited on Wednesday, September 27th to root-root-root for the home team, the New York Yankees as they take on the Tampa Bay Rays!

Whether you majored in biology or art, graduated in 1975 or 2016, there is no better way to network and meet members of our SUNY community than this annual event. We encourage you to take this opportunity to meet your fellow SUNY alumni members (we do have over 3 million!) and watch the Yankees march towards the playoffs. Be sure to come to Yankee Stadium with your favorite SUNY gear to represent your campus as SUNY fills the stadium. All are welcome to this event, so bring your family and friends along to watch some all-star athletes with some all-star alumni!

All who purchase a ticket to SUNY Alumni Night at the Ballpark will receive a voucher good for 2 complimentary tickets to a select 2018 regular season home game at Yankee Stadium.

Tampa Bay Rays logo versus New York Yankees logo

Of course, there is plenty of quality baseball to see this night. Yankee rookie outfielder Aaron Judge is nearing a record for most home runs by a rookie. You might have seen him hit one 495 (!) feet earlier this year that passed over the outfield bleachers. Catcher Gary Sanchez is already putting himself in the same group as all-time Yankee greats with his power at the plate too.

Event Details

Enjoy a networking event from 5:30pm-7pm with all-you-can-eat ballpark fare and drinks, including beer and wine, in the all new MasterPass Batter’s Eye Deck at Yankee Stadium. After a fun-filled networking hour with your fellow SUNY alumni, everyone will make their way to their seats in the 200-level (perhaps with some new friends!) to watch the Yankees take on the Tampa Bay Rays. This fun event and excellent seats are available for just $89 per ticket!

To recap, let’s go over six reasons you should go to Alumni Night at the Ballpark:

  1. It’s a great way to meet other SUNY alumni and share your favorite SUNY memories.
  2. All you can eat ballpark fare, including beer and wine!
  3. You can bring family and friends to enjoy this great event in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium.
  4. Watch all-star talent that will be on the field, like Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Luis Severino, Starlin Castro, and more.
  5. Show your SUNY pride! We love to see Yankee Stadium filled with SUNY colors for the whole world to see and this night is always perfect way to make it happen.
  6. All tickets purchased for SUNY Alumni Night at the Ballpark will receive a voucher good for 2 complimentary tickets to a select 2018 regular season home game at Yankee Stadium! Full details will be available at the game.

You can find out more registration details and get your tickets here.  It’s bound to be a home run and we can’t wait to see you there!

9/27/17 5th Annual National Dialogue on Race: Beyond The Color Line at Suffolk County Community College

5th Annual National Dialogue on Race: Beyond The Color Line

Wednesday, September 27, 2017
9:30 – 10:45am — Sagtikos, Van Nostrand Theatre (Map)

Join the dialogue… with guest speakers
Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner Risco Lewis-Mention and Dr. Arthur Romano professor of conflict resolution and peace education at George Mason University.

Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner Risco Mention-Lewis began her legal career as a Nassau County Assistant District Attorney in 1993, prosecuting misdemeanors.  She later became an Assistant District Attorney in County Court where she prosecuted felony cases. When litigating an attempted murder case in 1999 that involved teenagers, Mention-Lewis realized that young people were in dire need of new, comprehensive intervention strategies.
In 2005 she was honored with her promotion to the position of Unit Chief of Rising Star where she focused on gang prevention strategies. In January 2013, Mention-Lewis was appointed by the Suffolk County Executive to the position of County Deputy Police Commissioner, making her not only the first female to hold the position, but also the first person of color. Her work entails creating comprehensive programs to combat gang violence and recidivism through intelligence lead policing, community-oriented policing and assisting to develop Council of Thought and Action groups across the county.

Dr. Arthur Romano, an international peace-educator, consultant, certified nonviolence trainer and a professor of conflict analysis and resolution at George Mason University.  Dr. Romano has implemented innovative educational programs in Africa, South America, Asia, Europe and the US. Those programs have supported thousands of students in learning practical strategies for building healthy communities, becoming global leaders and productively engaging with conflict.  Dr. Romano has spoken numerous times at the United Nations and has collaborated with the Department of Public Information to promote the Gandhi-King Season for Nonviolence and the International Day of Peace.
